チェルシー地区に集まる一流ギャラリーのなかでも、新たな才能を求めるオーナーたちがいます。いわずとしれた著名な作家をメインに扱いながら、才能の発掘・育成にも積極的。写真専門でいえば、ヤンシー・チャードソン・ギャラリーが有名ですね。先ごろ開かれた写真展「ペルソナ」では、浅草ポートレイトで名高い鬼海弘雄さんの作品が登場。ニューヨークで彼自身２度目となる個展のオープニングに、さっそく足を運んできました。
ダイアン・アーバスに触発されて写真を始めたという彼の哲学的なアプローチは、浅草を行き交うクセのある人々がとても印象的。正面からハッセルを構え、シンプルな背景に浮き立たせた力強いポートレイトを目の当たりにすると、往年のアウグスト・サンダーに通ずる哲学が感じられます。鬼海さんのインスピレーションは多岐にわたり、ロシア文学を代表するアントン・チェーフォフ、アンジェイ・ワイダや今村昌平などの映画監督からも影響を受けています。
そんな彼の人柄は、たいへんフランクな方のようです。急な写真撮影のお願いにも気さくに応えてくださり、写真集にサインを求めるファンがいれば、時間をかけて丁寧に対応していたのが印象的でした。浅草で知らない人に声をかけ、撮影に挑むのは勇気がいるかと思いますが、彼の人間に対する愛情が安心感を与え、初対面でも軽やかに話せるのでしょうね。
日本ではすでに確立された感のある鬼海さんの挑戦は、海を越えてまだまだ続きます。ICPで昨年開かれたグループ・ショウの多大な反響もあり、米国でのさらなる飛躍が期待されている作家です。
Even some established galleries in Chelsea's Art District in Manhattan, owners are always looking for new talents. While they represent recognized artists, they eager to find emerging artists and provide assistance. Yancey Richardson Gallery is one of such photo galleries.
Hiroh Kikai, who has yet to receive recognition in the US thought he is widely known in Japan, had a solo show "Persona" at Yanchey Richardson Gallery in June 2009. I attended the opening, which was his second solo exhibition in New York.
His approach to photography is philosophical, and his portraits of awkward people in the Asakusa district of Tokyo are very imposing. He holds his Hasselblad right in front of the subjects and asks them to pose in front of the blank wall of the Sensoji Temple, which isolates the figures and emphasizes their particularity. His photographs remind us of August Sander's work. He draws inspirations from Anton Chekhov the great Russian writer, Andrzej Wajda the legendary Polish film director, and the Japanese film director Shohei Imamura.
Despite my sudden request, Kikai was kind enough to allow me to photograph him. Also he was very friendly to his followers who asked for his autograph, and he responded to their questions with respect. It requires courage to approach strangers for photographing, however I wonder if he makes them comfortable with his generous heart.
He has been making great strides since his group show at International Center of Photography in 2008, and I believe that he is the next prospective Japanese artist in the US.
