今年は特に、ファッションにまつわる写真展を多く見かけます。春に開かれたICPの展示会では、テアシートと呼ばれる雑誌の切り抜きをパネル貼りにしたファッション写真が集められ、５月に入ると、米国ファッション写真界の巨匠「リチャード・アヴェドン」の写真展が開幕。メトロポリタン美術館でも、ファッションモデルに焦点を当てた写真展が開催されるなど、近年まれにみる盛況ぶりです。写真史に輝くリチャード・アヴェドンやアービング・ペンらに続けとばかりにカメラを構える気鋭の作家たち。次世代を担うファッション写真家として、どのような名前が知れ渡るのでしょうか？
目下のところNo.1、欧米における売れっ子ファッション写真家といえば、スティーブン・マイゼルでしょう。80年代からすでに目立った活躍を見せ、イタリア版「ヴォーグ」のカバー撮影を毎号担当。世界の一流ファッションブランドの広告を手掛けています。
2000年前後に頭角を現した男女コンビ。カップルで活動するイネス・ヴァン・ラムスウィード＆ヴィヌード・マタディンは、さらなる飛躍が期待される写真家ではないでしょうか。共にオランダ出身で現在はニューヨーク在住。M/MParisというアートディレクター２人組とのコラボレーションにより、独創的なイメージを創り出すのが特徴です。
イコンと呼ばれる歴史に残るような写真には、作家のみならず、ヘアメイクやスタイリスト、アートディレクター、ひいては時代の顔となったモデルの影響が感じられます。関わった全てのアーティストによる「美の結晶」なのでしょうね。
There has been many fashion photography exhibitions this year. This past Spring at International Center of Photography, there was a show in which tear-sheets from fashion magazines were up on the walls. Then there was another one on Richard Avedon in May. At the Metropolitan Museum, there was an exhibition focused on fashion models.
Who would be the next generation photographers followed by the historical fashion photographers such as Richard Avedon or Irving Penn?
At this moment, the most influential fashion photographer would be Steven Meisel. He has been making iconic fashion images since the 1980s. He has worked on number of advertising campaigns for top fashion brands, and he has also created every cover and editorial stories for each issue of Italian Vogue.
New York based Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin are a Dutch fashion photographer duo who have started emerging around 2000. Their unique and inventive photographs are created by collaborating with M/M Paris.
I believe that iconic images in history are made possible by not only photographers but also by hair stylists, make up artists, art directors, and models. They all work together to create a perfect image.
