マンハッタンから東へ、車で走ること約3時間。ニューヨーカーの避暑地であるハンプトンは、俳優や政治家、セレブの別荘が立ち並ぶ海辺の街。多忙なニューヨーカーも、夏場は金曜を半日勤務にしたり、隔週で金曜が休みになる「サマー・フライデー」を利用して3連休にしたり。学校も6月から3ヶ月間は夏休み。ハンプトンの夏の週末は、ニューヨーカーで大賑わいです。
ブック・ディーラーのハーパー・レヴィーン氏は、そのハンプトンで写真ギャラリーを兼ねた書店を経営しています。主に写真集を扱い、日本人作家の作品もたくさん見られます。彼曰く「日本人の写真は、力強く際立っている」のだそうです。
ニューヨークで知られている日本人写真家の名前を挙げるとすれば、森山大道、荒木経惟でしょうか。若い写真家では、川内倫子も人気があります。現代アーティストに目を向けると、杉本博司の名前が一番に挙げられるでしょう。レヴィーン氏は、そういった大物作家の写真集から、レア・ブックと呼ばれる入手困難なものまで、稀覯本を中心に扱っています。吉田ルイ子の「ハーレム」、細江英公の「鎌鼬」がガラスケースの向こうに並んでいました。
レヴィーン氏がもっとも楽しみにしているのは、ニューヨーカーにまだ知られていない作家を発掘し、その名を世に広めること。年に1～2度は日本を訪れ、神保町の古本屋を覗き、コレと思った写真集を見つけてくる。高梨豊、中平卓馬の名前を挙げてくれました。いちばんのお気に入りは、北井一夫なんだとか。それらの本は、平均400ドルから2,000ドル（4～5万円から20～30万円）で販売します。ウェブサイトでも扱っていますが、新たに本を入手すると顧客にメールで知らせ、個別に予約を受けて取引するそうです。
ブック・ディーラーを始めて10年になるレヴィーン氏。以前はノン・フィクション作家だったと言うからおどろきです。大好きな写真集を集めているうちに、趣味が高じてビジネスにしたなんて、何だか羨ましいですね。話しに夢中になる彼はとっても楽しそうで、ハンプトンの海に反射する陽光のように輝いて見えました。
The Hamptons are popular seaside resort towns for New Yorkers, which are located about 80 miles east of Manhattan. There are vacation houses owned by politicians, actors, actresses, and celebrities. The towns are full of New Yorkers during summer.
A book dealer, Harper Levine, owns a bookstore/ photography gallery in East Hampton. He handles and specializes in photography books including Japanese photography books. He says that Japanese books are bold and outstanding.
Well known Japanese photographers among New Yorkers are, I would say, Daido Moriyama or Yoshinobu Araki. Rinko Kawauchi is getting popular. Hiroshi Sugimoto is an influential artist in the contemporary art world. Mr.Levine collects not only such popular artists' books but also rare books. In the glass case, I saw photography books such as "Harlem" by Ruiko Yoshida and "Kamaitachi" by Eiko Hosoe.
What Mr.Levine enjoys the most is to discover artists and to spread them out in the world. He visits Japan once or twice a year and walks around Jimpo-cho, the antiquarian bookstore district in Tokyo, looking for potential books. He gives names such as Yutaka Takanashi or Takuma Nakahira, and his favorite is Kazuo Kitai.
These rare books are sold for $400 to $2000. They are available online, but he sends out regular customers an e-mail as new books come in and meets them by appointment.
He has been in this business for 10 years now. It is surprising to hear that he used to be a non fiction writer. He has become a book dealer while collecting his favorite photography books. I can see how he enjoys his business.
