ニューヨーク唯一の写真美術館「インターナショナル・センター・オブ・フォトグラフィー」（通称ICP）は、1974年、コーネル・キャパにより創設されました。彼の実兄は「マグナム・フォト」の設立で有名な、ロバート・キャパ。兄のロバートをはじめ、デビッド・シーモアなど今は亡き写真家たちのドキュメンタリー作品を集め、後世に残す必要がある。そう感じたコーネルは、より多くの人に見て欲しいという願いを結実させ、ICPの創設に至りました。
アッパー・イーストサイド地区の5番街。レンガ作りの歴史的建造物を改良し、初代ICPが誕生しました。オープンから10年を経た1985年、写真界のさらなる発展に伴い、ミッドタウン地区の6番街に展示場所を拡張。初代の建物は、フォトグラフ新時代の到来と共に、1999年、閉館しました。その後、6番街の展示スペースを増設した新館が2000年秋に完成。建物の向かいには学校を併設し、写真家の育成に力を注いでいます。
現在ICPでは、報道写真の他にもアート写真やコンテンポラリー、ファッション写真、ビデオワークに至るまで幅広い作品を楽しむことができます。3年に1度、「ICPトライアニュアル」が開催され、すでに確立された作家だけでなく新進作家の作品も扱い、新しい芽を育てています。

International Center of Photography (ICP) is the only photographic museum in New York City. It was founded in 1974 by Cornell Capa whose brother was Robert Capa, the well known Magnum photographer. After the deaths of his brother Robert Capa and his colleagues Werner Bischof, Dan Weiner, and David Seymour in the 1950s, Cornell saw the need to keep 'Concerned Photography' alive and keep their work relevant and visible to the public eye. This is how ICP was created.
The first ICP was cited on 5th Avenue and 94th Street. One of brick wall housings was used as a museum. In 1985, they opened the second facility on 6th Avenue Midtown to help enormous growth in its exhibitions, collections, and education.
The Uptown ICP was closed in 1999 as arrival of new generation of photography, and they expanded the Midtown ICP for new media with climate control systems or digital presentation systems. Their education for photography is also expanded both its programming and community outreach.
Their collections of photographs are broad, not only documentary photography but also contemporary, fashion, and video works. They help emerging artists as well as established photographers to create new images at their Triennial Show.
