ここニューヨークには、数多くの書店が軒を並べています。ビルの全フロアを占めるほどの大型店、各種専門店や古本屋、個人経営に至るまで、店舗のスケールや形態は実にさまざま。その中でも、アーティストに好まれているのが、大手出版社はさておき、自費出版やインディペンデントの小さな出版社が手がけるアート関連の本。ギャラリーが集うチェルシーの一角、アート専門店「プリンティット・マター」には、芸術心を刺激する書籍が所狭しと並んでいます。
そのプリンティット・マターが主催する「ニューヨーク・アート・ブック・フェア」は、2008年の秋で3年目を迎えた本の祭典。サザビーズやクリスティーズにも比肩するオークションハウス「フィリップ・デ・ピュリー＆カンパニー」にて開催されました。チェルシーの写真スタジオも入る建物の3階フロアを独占。アート関連を主とするインディペンデントの出版社・雑誌社から、書籍を扱うアート・ギャラリー、骨董本のディーラーまで、世界中から140社以上が集まりました。
フェアに出展していた「ハッスラ・ブックス」のオーナーである、デイビッド・ショアナー氏に話を伺いました。薄い冊子のような写真集を出版していて、社名はスウェーデン在住の家族が経営する、農場の名前から来ているのだとか。ボストンで写真を学んだ後、今から2年前にマンハッタンのアルファベット・シティー地区にスタジオを設立。デジタル写真のリタッチ業務の傍ら出版社を立ち上げ、自分の作品やお気に入りの写真家の作品をセレクトし、写真集の構成からデザインまで一手に引き受けているそうです。アーティストと1対1で制作に取り組み、作家らしい作品の要素を喚起させる出版物を作り上げています。印刷した500部の本は、アート専門店で販売したり、ウェブサイトで流通させているそうです。
プリンティット・マターは、ブレイン・ストームとなるばかりでなく、インディペンデントで活躍する出版社やアーティストたちを支援する役目もあるんですね。
There are a variety of bookstores in New York, from big ones that occupy a whole building to independently run specialty bookstores. Artists tend to like independent book stores where they can find self-published and small press art books. "Printed Matter" is one such book store. It is a unique book store in Chelsea, the gallery district, and many artists draw inspiration from books that line the shelves there.
The third annual "New York Art Book Fair" hosted by Printed Matter was held at an auction house called "Phillips de Pury & Company" in the fall of 2008. Their office spans an entire floor of a large building in Chelsea that even houses a photographic studio. Over 140 companies gathered at the fair including art publishers, art magazines, art galleries and photography book dealers.
I had a chance to interview David Schoerner, the owner of "Hassla Books" which was named after his family farm in Sweden. After David studied photography in Boston, he moved to a small studio in Alphabet City in Manhattan and started his own business two years ago.
Working one-on-one with artists, he edits and designs books that truly encompass the essence of the artist. He prints a limited run of 500 copies per book and sells them online and at smaller art book stores. Printed Matter is not just a place for artists to brain storm. It also plays an important role in supporting independent publishers and artists.
