「木村伊兵衛のパリ」ソーホーのブティックにて
ニューヨークのソーホーと呼ばれる地区は、クリエイティブな人が集まるお洒落な町。10年前には数多くあったギャラリーは、倉庫を改造して作られた大きなスペースのあるチェルシー地区へ移り、今やブランドのブティック街へと様変わりしました。
イギリスのファッション・デザイナー「ポール・スミス」のブティックが、ソーホーにあります。メンズの服を主に扱いつつも、店内には洋服だけでなく、彼のセレクトした食器、小物から、写真集まで置かれる多彩なラインナップ。ファション・フォトグラファーとして有名なアービング・ペンの写真集から、ファッションに限らず、建築、園芸、フランシス・ベーコン等の作品集まで、クリエーターのインスピレーションになるような写真集が揃っています。先日訪れた時には、写真集「木村伊兵衛のパリ」が置いてありました。
この写真集は、2006年に朝日新聞社より出版され、2007年に銀座・エルメスのギャラリーとライカ銀座店にて、作品の展示がありました。内容は、木村伊兵衛が1954年から55年にかけてパリを撮ったカラーの写真。パラパラとページを捲らせてもらうと、少し色あせたような、淡い色調のパリが見えて来ます。画家に限らず、誰しもが憧れる「花の都パリ」を、アンリ・カルティエ＝ブレッソン、エド・ヴァン・デル・エルスケン、ロベール・ドアノー、ウィリー・ロニスと名前を挙げてもきりがない程数多くの作家が、写真としてパリの街を残してきました。特筆すべきは、上に挙げたどの写真家の作品もモノクロであること。その時代のパリのカラー写真は、かなり珍しいのではないでしょうか。
ギャラリーが無くなってしまっても、ソーホーは買い物に出かけるだけの町ではなく、やはり何かを得られる所だと思います。『木村伊兵衛のパリ』もまた、クリエーターに刺激を与え、50年代の古き時代から新しい物を作り出す源となるのでしょう。
Creators gather in Soho, one of the most fashionable districts in Manhattan. During the past ten years, most art galleries in Soho moved to Chelsea, a warehouse district, and boutiques took over the gallery spaces in Soho rebranding it into a shopping district.
Paul Smith, the British fashion designer, has a boutique in Soho. Even though it is a men's clothing store, you can find housewares, accessories and books there as well. There is a wide range of books at the store including a book of photography by Irving Penn, a notable fashion photographer, as well as those spanning architecture, gardening, and art books such as one by Francis Beacon. The other day, I came across "Paris" the book of photographs by Ihei Kimura, one of the Japanese masters.
The book was published in 2006 by Asahi Shinbun Publications. In 2007, some of the photographs in the book were exhibited at Helmes Gallery and at Leica Gallery both in Ginza. He was commissioned by Fujifilm to photograph Paris. The color photos in the book were taken between 1954 and 1955. As I flipped through the pages, faded colors of Paris appeared in front of me. Those were the days when not only painters but also photographers longed for Paris. Some names popped to mind: Henri Cartie=Bresson, Ed Van Der Elsken, Robert Doinouse, Willy Ronis and more. However, all of the above photographers photographed Paris in black and white. It was really rare to see color pictures of Paris of that time period.
Even though there are almost no art galleries in Soho, it is still an area that attracts artists who come in search of the je ne sais quois. And for those who come searching, I believe that these old pictures spark a fire in their imagination to create anew.
